Your Voice, Your Story š¤āØ
Iām guilty of hiding behind my decks š§ and letting the music do the talking. Iād carefully curate the perfect mixābelieving the songs were all that mattered. Yet I was completely oblivious to the value I was adding just by being professional and reliableāby showing up as agreed āļø, taking care of all the VIPs š and guests, and, of course, by presenting their favourite songs in a way only I could.
Creating a party vibe š was the easy partāso much easier than speaking on a microphone šļø or introducing another act I was sharing the big, scary stage with.
When I was gifted my first mic, it sat in its box š¦ for weeks while I stared at it, wondering what the hell I was supposed to do with it.
Iām sure youāve heard the usual advice:
šŖ® āUse a hairbrush in the mirror!ā (back when I had longer hair and actually owned a hairbrush).
š«£ āPicture everyone naked!ā
Despite everyoneās good intentions, none of that advice worked.
What Did Work?
Being thrown in the deep end š. No notice, no prepājust handed the mic and told, āOver to you. Go!ā š¤
My body froze šØ, but somehow, I said what needed to be saidāand I couldnāt wait to put the ruddy thing down!
When youāre thrown into the mix like I was, you either sink or swimāand whilst that wouldnāt work for everyone, had it never happened to me, I may never have gotten started. It ended up being one of the catalysts that shaped the learning experience I now provide for others.
Why It Feels So Overwhelming
Being handed a mic for the first time or walking out onto an empty stage with no practice run, having no idea how your voice will soundāitās easy for nerves to take over:
⨠Speaking too fast š£ļøšØ
⨠Stumbling over words
⨠Struggling to read whatās written on the card youāve been handed
I know how intimidating it can be. Iāve been thereārunning through several scenarios in my head before saying a single word.
Now, add a stage, a live audience š„š„, and layers of technology, video, and timing into the mix, and the pressure only increases.
Without the right support, most learners wouldnāt come back for more!
Maybe youāre unsure if your voice deserves to be heard šÆļø. Maybe you doubt you have anything meaningful to sayāor youāre starting to panic and forget everything youāre supposed to doāespecially in those high-pressure moments š§ ā³.
From Panic to Performance
But Iām not a one-woman production show for nothingāand I donāt do things by halves šŖ!
I got to know how this stuff works šļø by getting stuck in. Iāve learned to adapt, troubleshoot š§, and make things workāeven when the tech fails, the equipment glitches ā ļø, or the nerves kick in.
Iām uber passionate about giving my audience what they came for.
Having the skills and confidence to use a microphoneācoupled with my versatility and unique set of gifts š and talentsāhas not only gotten me consistently paid, but also re-hired, requested, and remembered š.
What Iāve Learned:
⨠Thereās only so much value for the audience if thereās only music.
⨠Your voice, tone, presence, and personality matter.
⨠Your story and truth deserve to be heardāmessy bits and all.
⨠True connection doesnāt happen when weāre perfectly polishedāit happens when weāre real, honest, and truthful about how we really feel.
What Makes the Difference?
Many creators, speakers šļø, presenters, and DJs š§ have felt the same way. Not everyone makes it, despite their desire to step forward and own their space.
What makes the difference?
They donāt have all the answersābut they either decide their story is worth telling š or the excitement of doing it far outweighs the regret of not doing it āļø.
They either find the support and coaching they need to overcome the barriersāor they feel the fear and do it anyway š.
