But if it\u2019s available, a loving hug or a chat with someone who truly gets it can make all the difference.<\/p>\n<p>And when it\u2019s not, the next best thing is giving yourself permission to take a moment:<br \/>\n\ud83c\udf2c\ufe0f to breathe, reset, and catch up with the world outside while self-regulating\u2014and figuring out your next move.<\/p>\n<p>We can become our own support by slowing down, taking a breath, and listening to what we need.<\/p>\n<p>No matter who I was surrounded by\u2014loved ones \ud83c\udfe1, colleagues at work \ud83d\udcbb, or strangers in a crowded room \ud83c\udf89\u2014I\u2019ve learned to step away into a space of calm.<\/p>\n<p>Finding small pockets of privacy has saved me more times than I can count:<br \/>\n\u2022 A bathroom at home \ud83d\udeaa<br \/>\n\u2022 A toilet cubicle at work \ud83d\udebb<br \/>\n\u2022 A quiet moment outside \ud83c\udf33<\/p>\n<p>I take slow, deep breaths at a pace I can handle and let myself sit with whatever I\u2019m feeling until it passes. Although sometimes, I need to have a really good cry\u2014and when I naturally stop (usually because I\u2019ve figured out what I need to do), I re-enter the world, feeling comforted and a little more grounded and secure within myself than before.<\/p>\n<p>\u2728 <strong>Advocating for yourself is a game-changer.<\/strong><br \/>\nFor too long, I ignored my own needs to honour other people\u2019s expectations and priorities.<br \/>\nI became so good at it that I lost sight of myself\u2014it crept up slowly until my body finally spoke loud and clear: <em>enough is enough!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udd38 And that\u2019s not good for anyone\u2014listen to your heart and body.<\/strong><br \/>\nTaking a moment for yourself isn\u2019t selfish\u2014it\u2019s an act of care. It helps you return stronger, clearer, and more aligned with who you are.<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udca1 <strong>Reflection:<\/strong><br \/>\nHave you ever stepped away to collect yourself but felt guilty about it?<br \/>\nOr wished someone would notice your struggle and hold space for you?<\/p>\n<p>\ud83c\udf1f <strong>Remember:<\/strong> Prioritising yourself doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re letting others down\u2014it means you\u2019re showing up for yourself so you can show up more fully when it matters.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Small Shifts to Support Yourself When You Feel Overwhelmed:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Pause and Breathe:<\/strong><br \/>\nTake three slow, deep breaths to calm your mind. Focus on the sensation of air entering and leaving your body.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Scan Your Environment:<\/strong><br \/>\nFind a quiet space\u2014a bathroom, an empty room, or an outdoor spot\u2014where you can gather your thoughts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Name What You\u2019re Feeling:<\/strong><br \/>\nSay it out loud or write it down\u2014<em>stressed,<\/em> <em>drained,<\/em> Naming emotions can make them feel more manageable.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ask Yourself What You Need:<\/strong><br \/>\nWhat small action can you take right now to feel calmer? A drink of water, a few minutes of quiet, or a deep breath?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Take a Micro-Moment:<\/strong><br \/>\nSet a timer for 1\u20135 minutes and give yourself permission to pause, stretch, or just be still.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Switch Off:<\/strong><br \/>\nSilence notifications or put your phone on <em>Do Not Disturb<\/em> if external noise is overstimulating you.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Step Outside:<\/strong><br \/>\nA few minutes of fresh air and a change of scenery can do wonders for resetting your mind.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Repeat a Grounding Phrase:<\/strong><br \/>\nTry: <em>&#8220;I am safe,&#8221;<\/em> <em>&#8220;This will pass,&#8221;<\/em> or <em>&#8220;It\u2019s okay to reset.&#8221;<\/em> Let these words remind you of your resilience.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Celebrate the Pause:<\/strong><br \/>\nAcknowledge your effort\u2014taking time to reset is an act of self-care, not weakness.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I never imagined how much these private spaces would become such powerful tools in my mental health journey\u2014or how much practice I\u2019d get at allowing myself to feel everything that came up as I contemplated how and when to resume life.<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udca1 Your time and energy matter.
